This mod was done a few years ago, approx 11/2009, thanks to fellow TC'r. I just stumbled on old picture so adding page. Couple of years after installing Air Lift bags-and installing the dual wheel kit I still wanted more sway control. I started looking at larger sway bars. It occurred to me that the F350 DRW bar might work. Our rear bar was very small, the F350 DRW bar is huge, quite a bit larger but unsure if I can mount to my 3/4 ton F250 'sterling' axle. A lot of research and looking at some different trucks decided I still wasn't sure if sway bar from an F350 drw would bolt up. I figured there must be gazillions of factory bars laying around and be easy upgrade for folks if I could make it work, wanted to find a take off from someone who replaced with an aftermarket sway bar to see if it would fit without spending any money. If it did then Id order a larger bar for a drw. ( I assumed, as a lot of folks replace theirs, if I could get it to fit I'd still need to order a larger one) . I was contacted by couple of folks close by who also frequent the forum and responded. They had their old bars-free for the taking, So drove down to pick up their old bars. Well apparently a miscommunication on my part but the bars were also from F250's. However the rear was almost twice the size of mine...? So I took them home.
As you can see the stock bar given to me considerably larger than mine. My rear bar was less that 3/4"ø (0.728"), the received bar is almost 1 3/16"ø (1.174"). To this day I do not know what or why the different bars on F250s although was an extended cab long bed. Not sure. Ive note listing for 3/4, 7/8 1 1/8, 1 3/16 & 1 1/4" factory bars? At any rate I did mount the 'new' rear bar just to see. Wow. With the larger bar the truck just handles flat...I cant imaging going any heavier-It did stiffen overall ride. But for the handling it was amazing. I would have liked to pursue installing a DRW bar-making its configuration work as its completely different from the F250 SRW bar and there are a ton of em out there 'free'. But with such a huge improvement my needs were met so didn't pursue. Stock end links can be reused and the axle mounts, they are the same. Only the rubber bushings are different in axle mounts, they have larger hole. If you dont get mounts with bar you'll need to order axle mount replacement bushings. (Stabilizer Bar Bushing) So other than sharing my free 'upgrade' if you are in need of more sway control-before ordering a rear bar- look at what you have. If its the small 3/4" rear bar check around-you might be able to upgrade for 'free' to 1 3/16"+ . Aftermarket bars are upward 1 1/2" & better- Back to our F250 truck page Back to Ourelkhorn Camper Modifications page |
