Made cover for sewing machine Sewing machine lives in the shop. Which can be quite dusty, both wood and metal, virtually exposed to outside air (block from beach-stuff rusts). Needs to be covered when not in use. I was going to make a vinyl cover, or possibly a wood cover but just haven't gotten round to it. Then Margaret had an order that showed up in this nice heavy cardboard box....Ummm that's almost size of sewing machine. Thinking would be good temporarily until I make something started cutting box up. About 3" too tall, and 3"' short of machine length (with its handle attached).
Cut off top of box down about 3" so its 10 1/2" tall. Then I cut one end of box off about 3" from end. Using cut offs laid 3 1/2" wide pieces between cut to make 19" long. Used 6" pieces to cover the joints on sides gluing with white glue. The bottom joints are covered with boxes inside flap (which will be covers top). Filled in under new top with scraps to fully support new top.
Cardboard cover! Pretty funny in my opinion. Covered perimeter edge and exterior cut joints with duct tape. Then I sprayed the whole thing inside and out with primer. Though mostly to 'seal' cardboard hides the branding print on cardboard box. I was also thinking I have all kinds of old shelf paper I could wrap box in and primer might help with it sticking if pursued. Going thru pantry there was almost a full roll of old butcher block contact paper.
Pretty hooky but machine pretty protected. Starting at one corner continuous piece wraps box. Folded over inside about 3" and on top about 4". Covered the one outside corner joint with clear strapping tape. Where contact paper is folded over inside and only stuck to cardboard I may if it doesn't want to hold is use the strapping tape to hold. On the top, as its stuck to itself, shouldn't be issue but again strapping tape will fix. Cut hole for handle to poke thru and small notch for cables. Only issue besides looking like a cardboard box covered in contact paper is the table lamp. Its placement causes box to need to be rotated to get handle thru. Kinda tweaks box so will move lamp back an inch. Then it would be just lifting left side slightly shift to right to clear handle and lift off. But once over machine box doesn't move around. One side against handle/balance wheel, the back against motor, front and left side edge against machines table edge when down. This isn't something I would have thought of doing, cant help but laugh every time I look at it, cardboard box. But its actually functional as far as protecting sewing machine. Its also, due to its location, invariably is going to have stuff laid on top of box. It's pretty strong but am going to staple a piece of 1/8" plywood of top.
