Add another drawerAdding yet another drawer. When I did the insulation a while back I discovered quite a bit of free space above the generator box and other places. As I get roundtoit I'm going to try to utilize them for more storage. Removing the cut in fire extinguisher mount accesses this area, between dinette/slide floor and top of generator box. The area is about 6" high x 19" wide x depth of dinette, as this is in the wing area it extends all the way to exterior wall of the wing. However there's is the generator wiring and propane line right in the middle of it. I cant access area from outside-its where the wing seam is & cant access from the rear wall because of the lower ladder mounts.Today I started thinking bout it again and realized I could add a drawer inside and utilize at least some of the area. Drawer would be about 4" x 15" wide x 19" deep. All I need to do is enlarge the extinguisher mount hole. Well that & build a drawer & try to match the other faces again.
Mount removed looking into hole. Miles of extra wire, should be able to move
Moved the wires to see what size drawer to build. Still a ton of extra, I'm going to square up, Use plastic ties to attach to wall- I hate messy wiring. I've enlarged the hole bout 1 1/4" in height and 3" on left side. Added 1" on right side for wire clearance. So the hole is now 5" x 15 1/2". Spacer is just sitting there, Ill make the drawer face larger to cover. I wedged a 1X2 to check drawer slider fit and wire clearances.
I cut drawer bottom and mounted slides so I can figure out where to attach the slide end brackets and the 1x2 at rear. Also to check fit before I build the drawer. Looks like it's going to work! Got 1x2 marked so I can remove it, attach rear hangers & reinstall. Because I really cant reach back there do any thing Ill cut 2- 1/4"x 4"squares and notch, attaching to walls to capture ends of 1x2. Then remove drawer bottom, pull slides off and build drawer. Yet to do, tidy up wiring. I'm going to pull the 110 romex loose from the receptacle, drill a hole in header (at X) and rout wire above drawer to get away from the 12v cabling, also to give me slack if i need to work on the plug.
Once the wiring is cleaned up I'm going to make a cover so something in the drawer can't snag them. Though I'm going to sand the header think Ill staple/wrap plastic.
Got my 'stepped' drawer pieces cut, false face cut routed & stained. Just awaiting assembly. If your a carpenter/ cabinet maker you can skip this. Its how I build drawers, utilizing the drawer slides. Bottom is cut full size, using lots a glue and brads, the sides are attached to front and rear pieces, the bottom is attached to all 4, I use a false front. The slides attach to both bottom & side. Its easy & ends up quite strong. Once installed I check clearance & make a small tapered block and glue to bottom of drawer with couple of brads thru bottom piece, this acts as catch. It will slide closed but you have to pick up drawer to open. Or you could buy the little plastic catch. Also I finished installing the rails and attaching the rear slide 1X2 mount as described above. All that's left to do is finish drawer and set into slide. Measure where front needs to be, install & install handle. I had this old wooden pull-it'll work well since the drawer is at floor height and wont have to worry bout kicking it or catching on it as its rounded. Still don't know what Ill use this drawer for. Margaret's wanting me to modify the wire pantries waste of space thingi. Oh yea and find a new home for the Fire Extinguisher.
As its going to be accessible from out side the door think Ill put all the stuff that's we go back in to get, binoculars water bottles holders etc. BBQ tools and stuff might be good too. For sure all my odd screws parts & mics 'junk' to fix stuff would be good in the back as don't get to it often. Funny how quickly new found storage gets absorbed :) Pleased with the way the face turned out. I've done some other wood work in the camper-this turned out the best--course I wasn't too concerned when I built the drawer as its on the floor and you cant see it-so naturally it turned out the best.
Built a cabinet to house the removed fire extinguisher-See extq. cabinet |
